Building a Global Network: Our Expansion into APAC
How we built a resilient multi-region network infrastructure across Asia-Pacific with sub-5ms latency.
The Challenge
When we first set out to expand our network presence into the Asia-Pacific region, we knew we were facing a significant challenge. The APAC market is diverse, spanning multiple countries with varying regulatory requirements, and the geographical distances involved meant that achieving low-latency connections would require careful planning.
Our goal was ambitious: deliver sub-5ms latency across all major APAC markets while maintaining our commitment to 99.99% uptime.
Our Approach
Phase 1: Strategic Location Selection
We began by analyzing traffic patterns and customer demand across the region. This data-driven approach led us to identify key locations that would serve as our primary points of presence:
- Tokyo, Japan - Our primary hub for Northeast Asia
- Singapore - The gateway to Southeast Asia
- Sydney, Australia - Serving the Oceania region
- Hong Kong - Critical for mainland China connectivity
Phase 2: Building the Backbone
With locations selected, we focused on building a robust backbone network. We partnered with multiple tier-1 carriers to ensure redundancy and established direct peering relationships with major content providers in the region.
"The key to achieving sub-5ms latency wasn't just about having points of presence in the right locationsโit was about how we connected them." โ Network Engineering Team
Phase 3: Edge Optimization
The final phase involved deploying our edge infrastructure. We implemented advanced traffic engineering techniques including:
Results
Six months after our initial deployment, we've achieved remarkable results:
| Metric | Target | Achieved |
|---|---|---|
| Average Latency | < 5ms | 3.2ms |
| Uptime | 99.99% | 99.997% |
| Packet Loss | < 0.01% | 0.003% |
What's Next
Our APAC expansion is just the beginning. We're already planning our next phase, which will include additional points of presence in emerging markets and enhanced connectivity options for enterprise customers.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build the infrastructure of tomorrow.
